After receiving feedback from my focus group on the first draft of my short film, I have made some improvements.
I began by cutting out any unnecessary shots which had no impact on my plot. This meant that my film was shorter, and consequently was more engaging for audiences.
One piece of feedback I received was that I could include some faster shots. Although I did not particularly agree with this due to the slow pace suiting my melancholic music and sad atmosphere, I did edit one shot to be faster. My protagonist is seen sat on the floor in front of the lockers and people ignore and walk past her without helping. This shot lasted 12 seconds previously therefore I increased the speed of this to 300%...
I liked the result because it looked similar to a time lapse and implied that more people also ignored the bullying.
I also improved the appearance of my title; this was only placed to represent how it would look. I decided to use the same font which I used on both my poster and double page spread in order to link to my house style. Due to this, I had to choose a font available on Premiere Pro, Photoshop and InDesign therefore I was slightly limited. This is the font I chose...
Whilst simple, I am pleased with this because it suits the educational theme of my piece whilst being bold. Furthermore, on my poster I will put it onto a red block to make it stand out even more and emphasise my popping colour. I added a subtle drop shadow to make it look more interesting and stand out. Although it will be white on my poster, it was important to me that I use the same font in order to link to my house style throughout my main product and ancillary tasks.
I also added my statistic about bullying at the end in order to reflect the educational theme of my product. The statistic I decided to us was...
This was from http://www.bullyingstatistics.org/content/bullying-and-suicide.html. I wanted to include a shocking statistic that was true and sad to make my audiences reflect more on what they had just watched. I also aimed to use a fact that included bullying AND suicide as these were both themes of my product. I placed this on a black background and used white text so that it stood out. I also used the same font as my title and the one used in my poster and double page spread to represent my house style.
I used simple colours and font so as not to detract from the severity of the statistic. I also thought that it was best to place this at the end of my film because it triggers a lingering thought in my audiences so that they are more reflective.

In response to my feedback, my main aims in terms of improvement are:
- cutting out any unnecessary shots in order to make my film shorter
- add in the shots which needed to be re-filmed
- improve the appearance of my title as this merely represented where my real title would go
- research and include an appropriate statistic about bullying

Update 19/02 - First Draft of Film
Today, I completed the 'first draft' of my short film.
I am happy with the flow of the story and find that it is still understandable despite being a silent movie...
I only need to edit the odd clip to improve the lighting or overall appearance. Furthermore, I must reshoot the specified clips and add slot these in. I will also be focusing on my audio; I must ensure that the transitions between the different pieces are unnoticeable and they fit together seamlessly. I also need to work on the font, size and colour of my title as I have not done this yet. I will then add professional-style credits to the end of the piece.
After this, I will present my film to various focus groups in order to get feedback and constructive criticism. I can then do the final edit and my film will be completed.

Update 09/02
I have now finished editing the second scene of my short film. The second scene goes straight into the montage of my main character's experiences with bullying. I did not add a scene in between the first and second; with short films it is important to get straight into the action and not waste time.
I added a 'dip to black' between the shot of my protagonist leaving her house and getting to college. This transition represents a change in time and setting. I also added this transition before the montage began for the same reasons. I found that this transition looked the most professional. Some were too cliché. For example, the 'paint splatter' and 'wipe' were interesting but did not fit the serious context of my piece, setting a happier, more comedic tone.
I also added the audio to both scenes, and added an exponential fade between the different pieces of music to make the transition less distracting. I begin with a calmer, slightly positive piece of music. This continues until the cyber-bullying begins before my main character has even left her home, to convey the seriousness to my audience almost immediately. I also felt that the happier music at the beginning puts my audience in a false sense of security, making what follows even more shocking.
The sad piece of music is not long enough to cover the rest of the film therefore this is repeated seamlessly. I achieved this by clipping the end and importing it again.
I reduced the 'audio gain level' to -10 as this made it slightly quieter so as not to distract the audience too much from the action, but to compliment it.
My music has lots of lone piano notes therefore through editing I was able to match the first shot of the montage with the first note of the song. I also did this later on. I feel that this successfully represented the change in mood.
No editing was needed in terms of reducing grain, however I did increase the brightness of some shots in the 'bathroom scene'. This is because the lighting here was poor and came from above, which gave my characters dark circles underneath their eyes. To do this, I dragged 'lighting effect' onto my clips, and switched this from 'spotlight', which is more stylised, to 'directional' as this increased the brightness of all of the clip. I reduced the intensity to 20% to make this change subtle, and not too bright. I put each shot from this scene to the same setting, using the same adjustments, in order to maintain the continuity.
I am happier with this after editing; although subtle, the added brightness makes the shots look more professional.
The following shot is filmed at night in much darker conditions. This represents the darkness encroaching on my protagonist.
This is what scene 1 and scene 2 look like together...
Overall, I am happy with this because they flow together nicely and I can see my film begin to take shape as a sad, emotional piece.
However, after further editing and adding the rest of my scenes, I may need to cut my montage down so that my short film isn't too long when put together. Although I will wait until the end to see how long my film is before making this decision.
I have also added my title quickly for now, however I will be looking in more detail at the colour and style of the font. Although, I like the frame hold as it does not disturb the action as much and makes the title link to the context more.

Update 08/02
Today was my last day of filming, as I filmed the final scene of my short film.
This involved my main character and 'The Helper' ,according to Propp's Theory, as the character aids the protagonist. In the scene, my protagonist has just experienced more bullying but a 'helping hand' comes towards the camera (placing the audience in the protagonist's position) in order to help her and save her life.
In terms of costume, I brought my protagonist a dark top seen earlier in the film, with a little bit of bright colour. This reflects the hope created by the introduction of 'The Helper'. I asked my other actor to wear a floral blouse in order to reflect tranquillity and purity. I chose this actor also because of her interesting hair, dyed green. This was to represent that very different people with contrasting appearances can be friends and share a commonality.
I waited to introduce this character until the end to show audiences that this does not always happen, and often the effects of bullying are permanent.
I referenced my detailed shooting script made in the pre-production stages to know all of the shots I needed and any movements involved.
Please find some of my unedited clips below...
These also juxtapose with the shot-reverse-shots used previously in the film in scenes between the protagonist and antagonist, showing that the confrontation will stop now action has been taken (calling the helpline number and finding a friend.)
I can now edit this scene into the rest of my film. I think that I will end with the shot of the two friends walking together and laughing. I may also add a slow motion effect onto this clip to emphasise that the character is now calmer and happier.

In this scene it was important to me to use two-shots in order to convey the friendship and dependency. This emphasises the importance of people helping victims of bullying, saving their lives.

Update 07/02
Today, I finished editing Scene 1...
The main thing to be done in post-production with this scene was reducing the grain. I filmed in low light, which was retrospectively a bad idea seen as I was filming with a camera of poorer quality that would make this appear worse.
I clicked on the clip I was editing and used 'replace with After Effects composition.' This meant that any editing done in After Effects would be transferred to Premiere as opposed to exporting as a different composition and importing this into Premiere.
I added effects such as 'reduce grain' and 'sharpen' and adjusted the amounts in various settings. For example, I switched the sample selection to 'manual' so that I could target the areas with the most grain myself. This allowed After Effects to analyse a more accurate pattern of noise.
These are the alterations I made...

I labelled the clips when they were edited as 'rose' coloured so that it was easily visible to me which ones were already done.
Overall, I am much happier with the appearance of these shots, as seen with this comparison of before and after...

I quite like the hazy effect over the shots because it looks like a happy fantasy, which will make the consequent bullying more of a shock to the audience. However, I have not lost too much definition in the shots as I sharpened them again slightly and did not reduce the grain too much.
I still need to add my audio and two shots to this but I am happier with the appearance and flow of the first scene; I did not want to begin with grainy, unprofessional shots as audiences would be less likely to continue watching.

First Draft Double Page Spread
Today I finished creating the first draft of my double page spread for my short film-one of my ancillary tasks...

Here is a closer look at each page individually...

I am pleased with how my double page spread looks; I have used the conventions of similar professional products. For example, I have included: appropriate font sizes in a range of interesting styles; used a suitable mode of discourse appropriate to audiences of Empire magazine; used clear text in terms of columns and colour; added a pull quote to attract readers; used a range of appealing images using varied settings, lighting and distance; captioned my images and used correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
I have also incorporated a clear theme throughout the double page spread in terms of house style with repeated text styles and colour. I used this colour as my theme. I chose this by using the 'eyedropper tool' on InDesign to match the eye colour of my protagonist. These are a real focus throughout my film as they are 'windows to the soul' therefore they stand out more by repeating the colour. This was my popping colour; as you can see the majority of my text is black on a white background. I did this because the colours juxtapose well. As a result, the article is more easily legible, which is important because if it wasn't, potential audiences would stop reading.
As you can see, my flat plan was very useful; I detailed this well with my ideas, which made the construction process much easier and quicker. The layout of my page looks professional because the placement of the images and the columns make the article look less text-heavy, which is important as audiences are less likely to read something too long.

Overall, I am very pleased with the appearance of my double page spread; it looks clear and professional whilst incorporating an interview and review cohesively as is often the case in Empire magazine. However, I may alter my popping colour as, although I love that it is the same as the colour of my protagonist's eyes, it does not stand out as much as I would like. Furthermore, I have used a lot of red in my film through mise-en-scene and aim to use red in my poster. Due to this, I may change this to red to suit a house style.
After getting feedback, I will make my final improvements.

Update 05/02
Today I chose and edited the images for my double page spread...
I took these from my footage by taking screenshots of the videos. This ensures that the images in the double page spread are cohesive with the film itself.
I took these screenshots...
and pasted them into a Microsoft Word document, where I saved them as a PDF file...
I opened these files in Photoshop to begin my editing. I increased the vibrancy and saturation of the images subtly in order to make them stand out well against the white background of my double page spread...

They did not need much editing other than this but I did use the 'spot healing' tool here to reduce some of the redness in my actor's face. This ensured that the eyes were the focal point of the image...

I then saved these from Photoshop as JPEG files...
and used the 'rectangle frame' tool to set out how big I wanted each to be on the page...
I then used the 'place' tool in InDesign to import them onto the page inside my frames and used the 'fitting' setting to 'fit content proportionally...
Next time I will be adding the finishing touches to my double page spread, including the heading, captions, page numbers and star rating.

Audience Questionnaire
I designed a questionnaire to give to potential audiences of all ages. In this I asked multiple questions about where and how they were likely to watch short films. This would inform my decision about where my short film would go afterwards to reach the wide audience.
This is my questionnaire...

I questioned 20 people overall, 15 12-18 year olds and 5 people over 25.
And these were just some of the results...
As you can see, the majority of those asked were 12-18 year olds because these are my main target audience. However, I also asked some parents to see if they were also likely to watch my short film.
80% of people asked said they were likely to watch a short film about bullying, and the majority of these were female, suggesting that this gender is the most likely to do so.

70% of those asked would prefer to watch the film in a school environment, showing that it is a good idea to market my short film to schools as an educational piece. However, people would still watch it in their spare time therefore I asked which platform they would prefer...

The most popular platform for short films is YouTube, therefore I can upload my film here easily and this will be free. It is accessible to audiences, particularly of my target audience's age (approximately 12-18) and they can like, comment and share.
From my questionnaire, I have learned that my audience will predominantly be female 12-18 year olds, watching in a school environment or on YouTube in their spare time. I also learned that most of the people likely to watch the film have been affected by bullying, therefore it would suit these people educationally.

Update 02/02
Today I have begun the construction of my double page spread on InDesign. This is what it looks like so far...
I placed my text using the text tools and used the frame tools to plan the rest of the space. I am happy with this progress because it looks good so far. I have been following my flat plan, which has made the whole process much quicker and easier. Next time I will place my images in the areas blocked and add the finishing touches.

My Review Article
They say all good things come in small packages. That must be why Lauren Heslop’s must-see short film has hit the ground running with its bitterly truthful take on the taboo topic which people often turn a blind eye to-bullying. From its relatable characters to sincere sentiments, is it any wonder that her directorial debut is still ‘hanging on’ to our heart strings?
Suffering with depression is unbelievably severe and saddening, even with a support system surrounding you. Imagine how difficult it is for 16-year-old Sophie Rein, who is struggling to face the unwavering distress caused by her ruthless bully, Emily Redding. Hanging On tracks her lonely struggle down a dark, dismal path of despair until she finds the ultimate escape from her cruel world. After her suicide, Sophie gets to relive her final day, where one kind act could save her life. The film empathetically portrays the importance of acting against bullying when you see it; one day later could be too late.
“I wanted to create something with meaning, with the potential to help, to change, to improve” (stresses Heslop). And with 1.5 million young people having been bullied in the UK during the past year alone, we say she is doing just that. The short already has over 1 million views on YouTube, not to mention it trending on both Facebook and Twitter as well as receiving Best Drama at the Aesthetica Film Festival 2017, Best Director and Best Actress in the Creative England Showcase at the Kinofilm Festival in the same year. “The time for action is now!” (declares Heslop). “It is all too common in modern society. Today we start building a safe tomorrow for future generations. The only way we can do this is through freedom of expression. My aim from this short film was not money, success or fame, but to encourage others to create and achieve in combat against inequality.
Empire asked Heslop just what inspired her to create such a beautiful, moving piece. She humbly states, “Well the real beauty of the story is the brutal truth. There was no script, no fake scenes; everything was taken from the personal experiences brought forward. I saw the opportunity to educate young people, parents and teachers about the importance of speaking out when being bullied and how stepping in is essential to prevent the circumstances outlined in this honest representation of real life."
The Empire Verdict (what we said) first look
Hanging On is an emotional, honest and dramatic representation of real life situations which too many people suffer with silently. This thought-provoking masterpiece tracks the deteriorating health of Sophie Rein, played by Isobel Baxter, as she attempts to combat her struggles with depression due to the relentless torment by her bully, Emily Redding, played by Ellie Allport. Being an ordinary teenage girl comes with its own difficulties, but for Sophie life has become unbearable. When her prayers go unanswered, she is engulfed by her misery, which leads her to commit suicide. But with one chance to relive her final day, could she finally get the helping hand she has been craving?
Compactly structured, this short film focuses on the two main characters, further emphasising its confrontational nature. The depth in understanding shown in only five minutes is unparalleled in others of its kind. Symbolic of the main message portrayed throughout Hanging On, the impressive demonstration of the butterfly effect brings to light that one kind act could save somebody’s life.
The opening sequence shows Sophie Rein waking up to begin her normal day, but when she reaches school her day is anything but normal. The bullying is introduced within the first few seconds, successfully setting the sinister tone of the piece. Here we see the physical abuse begin. Surprisingly, this is not only shown from the point of view of our protagonist, but also the bully. I feel that this added much more depth to the film; anybody can show a bully in a bad light, but to force the audience to put themselves in their shoes addresses the commonly missed issue that there are so many reasons for bullying and this could also be a cry for help. In fact, in our exclusive interview with Heslop, she admitted that she would have explored this in much more detail if she were creating a feature film. We were even let into some insider information-Emily Redding is only bullying Sophie Rein because she is jealous; she has a horrible family life and her mean girl façade is a front to numb herself against the heartbreak. As time passes (cleverly shown through subtitles as well as how filming was spread over the different seasons) we can see Sophie’s struggles with depression and in the deafening silence of her problems, she eventually commits suicide. This was shown very tastefully; as this film is primarily educational, it was important for Heslop that this was not about giving sufferers any ideas, but to encourage passers by to act out. When she gets the chance to relive her last day, could one ally be in the right place at the right time?
Making her breakthrough into the short film industry, Hanging On is the best we have seen in a long time; Heslop focused on the purpose of her product. Whilst cinematography and lighting are important in any piece, she did not let these overshadow the educational themes. Her naturalistic approach to the production resulted in a moving, relatable story addressing the key issues which are lacking in most educational shorts. Heslop was not only director but producer, wardrobe mistress, cinematographer and editor. Despite having all of that to balance, her casting was impeccable. Isobel Baxter, who plays Sophie Rein, brings truth and inspiration to the character. Acting in a silent film is challenging enough, but I felt that the majority of her acting came from the eyes, which Heslop focused on through extreme close-ups. This is emphasised further due to breaking the fourth wall. When Sophie was looking right at me before her suicide, I felt so helpless, just as she did. The actor who played the bully, Ellie Allport, was also extremely successful in her representation of the character and it was clear that the two worked very well together. Both the physique and talent of the actors shaped the film as a wonderful piece of cinema.
You could take my word for it, and leave it at that, but I strongly urge you to watch this film for yourself. Whether you are young or old, watch Hanging On to learn more about the subject which we all claim to know everything about already. OUT NOW!
