Firstly, I decided to use the 'fill' tool to create a solid black background. Many posters have a coloured background however I felt that an image of my protagonist surrounded by darkness had connotations of depression and suicide. Furthermore, I will be using white text and due to the stark contrast between the two colours, the text will still be as easily legible as black text on a white background.
I then designed my title. As stated previously, I wanted to use the same font across my film, double page spread and poster. Consequently, I had to choose a style available across all programs. Although my text is simple, it is bold and stands out well on my poster. Often, over-complicated fonts on posters are less legible. To make it more interesting, I added a red background behind the text. This use of my popping colour really helped the title to stand out to potential audiences. I also used a 'bevel', 'emboss', 'stroke' and 'drop shadow' to add interest.
I then consulted my flat plan and decided to add a red banner across the top of the page. This is to draw attention to the fact that this is a short film as many student-made short film posters fail to specify this. I used the same font as my title but much smaller. I did not 'bevel' or 'emboss' this because it is too small to make a difference, but I did add a 'drop shadow' in order to link to the main title and my house style.
Next, I designed the award logos which will be placed at the top underneath my banner. I wanted to place the award logos here because they are more likely to be seen and many audiences are attracted to films which are critically-acclaimed. I used this image...
I edited this using Photoshop. Firstly, I used the magic eraser to remove the background. I then filled the background with the black used on my poster background and filled the leaf symbols in white. This was the result...
I looked back at the article I had written and took the awards listed here to enforce continuity across my ancillary tasks. I decided to use three of these, placing one on each side and one in the centre. I made the central one bigger to draw attention to it. I stated that two awards came from the Kinofilm Festival and one from the Aesthetica Short Film Festival. To add some symmetry, I placed the Kinofilm logos on either side and the Aesthetica award in the middle.
This is what my poster looks like so far...
Next time, I will add the text for my awards as well as my review quote.
